Building a School for Children In Gambia
Educating The Young
Give a Hand is committed to increasing access to quality public education in West Africa, especially for orphans. Education, more than any other sector of development, seeds dramatic improvement in poverty reduction, gender equality, health outcomes, child immunization, HIV/AIDS prevention, environmental protection and wildlife conservation. Simply put, widely available public education will lead to a prosperous, peaceful and sustainable future for Africa.
For now Give a Hand has chosen to focus on Gambia because we deem it as one of the countries that desperately need improvement when eradicating poverty and inequality for disadvantaged children in West Africa. Our solution is to systematically develop community schools in rural regions of Gambia for the purpose of expanding classroom access, improving the quality of learning and providing a safety net for orphans who face a dismal future without access to school.
We build strong partnerships with the villagers and government in every community where we work. Our entire school building model is built on community ownership and project sustainability. We work hard to ensure everything we do is efficient, effective and culturally appropriate.
Give a Hand has identified areas for development that we will be funding over the next 2 years:
- A purpose-built classroom so that there are facilities for the very youngest children in the school
- Renovation of two classrooms so that they become safe and secure places to learn
- Children’s desks, teachers furniture and textbooks
- Specific support for female students to ensure they stay in school
- Support for 150 parents to form local Savings and Loans Groups so that they can support their children and keep them in school.
This is a fantastic opportunity for us not only to contribute to the education of vulnerable children, but also to support a whole community for many years to come. Please fill in the form below to donate and help make a difference.
With your help and support we successfully completed building our first school which opened on the 22nd of April 2017 and our second school opened later that year – September 2017.
